OBJECTIVE

* To develop a set of participatory activities that allow students to collect and visualize data.

* To reason with data to reach scientific conclusions (hypothesis testing)

APPROACH

* Focus on reasoning through analogy

* Study aspects of human movement that are easily visualized and appreciated

* Use simple approaches to enable direct measurements of parameters such as force and motion

* Design experiments so that several reasonable conclusions are possible – there is no correct answer

* Lead students through the process of scientific reasoning

* Use examples from sports and medicine to put results in context

MECHANICS

* Involves ASU Undergraduate and graduate students

* Credit given through the School of Life Sciences Internship Program

* Students  trained by participating in ongoing research in the LIMB laboratory at ASU under direction of graduate students and lab Principal Investigator

* After lab training, students are trained to lead participatory activities. Training includes theory and philosophy of science as well as specific information about human movement

* Undergraduate students (teams of 2) work with teachers and students at the K-12 level to work through activities
